Enrollment Updates

If you completed the prerequisite for a Bio Sci course outside of UCI or via AP credit, you will need to submit a Course Prerequisite Clearance Form to be cleared for enrollment. You DO NOT need to submit a form if you are currently enrolled in the prerequisite of a course you will take in the Winter.

The form does NOT override major or repeat restrictions. If you are not a major that requires the Bio Sci course you are requesting to enroll in, or if you are attempting to enroll to repeat the course, you will be held to the major and repeat restriction lift date and your request will be processed just before the restriction lift date and time.

Prerequisite clearance will remain in place for Dunlop School students and will not be removed at the end of each quarter. Effective Fall 2023, incoming transfer students will be cleared for all courses that they’re eligible for. Students should check your existing clearances in StudentAccess under Course Eligibilities (Student Profile–> Enrollment–> Course Eligibilities) before completing the prerequisite clearance form.

Bio Sci will not allow students to enroll in classes with overlapping times; students need to ensure they do not enroll in classes that have overlapping final exam periods.

All Bio Sci labs (courses with an L suffix), Bio Sci D170, and Bio Sci 100 have an early drop deadline of WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24 at 5PM. Students cannot swap/change their lab section after the early drop deadline. Students may add open Bio Sci labs through the first meeting of the lab. After the early drop deadline, students should contact biosciadvising@uci.edu for assistance enrolling in open labs.

The Dunlop School prioritizes lab enrollment for Dunlop School of Biological Sciences seniors who are closest to graduation. Bio Sci will prioritize enrollment in upper division labs by pre-approving all Bio Sci students who can reasonably graduate in the next few quarters. The graduating senior priority group includes: Dunlop School students that started at UCI as a freshman in Fall 2022 or earlier, a transfer in Fall 2024 or earlier, and students with a reasonable graduation application on file.

During enrollment windows, pre-approved seniors will be able to enroll in labs that they meet the prerequisites for. Students can check their clearances beginning week 7 (May 12) in StudentAccess (Student Profile → Enrollment → Course Eligibilities).

If you believe you should have access to a lab that does not appear on your course eligibility list, contact biosciadvising@uci.edu prior to your enrollment window.

On Friday, July 18 at 12:00pm, Bio Sci lab sections that were initially restricted to specialized majors will open to all students in the graduating senior priority group.

Ex: A Spring 2026 graduating senior wants to take Bio D111L with Bio D103 in Fall. Once the student enrolls in Bio D103, they contact Dunlop School chat or biosciadvising@uci.edu for Bio D111L clearance.

The following Bio Sci courses will initially be restricted to specialized majors (L) that require the course to meet graduation requirements:

In Fall, Bio Sci utilizes New Only Restrictions to reserve space for students starting at UCI in Fall 2025. The number of reserved seats will appear in the NOR column of the Schedule of Classes. Once all seats for continuing students have been filled, the status column will update to “NewOnly” meaning the remaining seats are only for incoming students. If another student drops, the class status will switch to open and another student can add. NewOnly restrictions will lift on Bio 97 and upper division courses on July 31 at 12pm. The NewOnly restriction will lift on Bio 93 on August 29.

July 18 at 12:00pm:

July 31 at 12:00pm:

• Upper division Bio Sci labs will open to all students in the School of Bio Sci and BME: Premed major that meet the prerequisites, including senior standing.
• Specific “Major only” (L) restrictions will change to “School major only” (N).  All majors under the School of Bio Sci that meet the prerequisites will be able to add previously restricted sections of E106, E155, M114, and M124A.
• NewOnly restrictions will be removed from Bio 97 and upper division courses.

August 29 at 12:00pm:

• Bio 93 major and new only restriction lifts.

September 2 at 12:00pm:

• The major restriction will lift from all Bio Sci courses, including upper division Bio labs.
• The repeat restriction will lift from all Bio Sci courses.
• 18-unit restriction will lift.
  • Submit a request for excess units via the Bio Sci Student Affairs Forms page.

September 24 at 5pm:

Early drop deadline for ALL Bio Sci labs and Bio Sci 100:

ALL Bio Sci Labs, Bio Sci 100, and Bio D170 have an early drop deadline of September 24 at 5pm. This information is published on the Schedule of Classes in the comments section and above every course that has an early drop date. It is your responsibility to note this early drop deadline and drop any courses you do not intend to complete. Late drops or switches (which require a drop to add another lab/section) will not be allowed after the early drop deadline.

Bio Sci 90L

Bio Sci 90L is a new combined version of Bio 93L and Bio 94L. Students with credit for Bio 94L may not enroll. In Fall, this course is reserved exclusively for incoming Bio Sci majors.

Bio Sci E189

Bio Sci E189 is restricted to Project LIFTED. Authorization codes will not be provided.

Bio Sci 191A

Bio Sci 191C is restricted to students completing the Global Sustainability Minor. Contact Dr. Jessica Pratt (jdpratt@uci.edu) for authorization.

The following courses will remain “Major only” (L) restricted throughout the enrollment process. These courses are only open to specific majors:
