Bridging The Gap at UCI

Bridging The Gap at UCI is an organization whose focus is to advance students toward careers in the sciences and healthcare. About:
As a student-run biomedical scientific publication, we provide members with the opportunity to write about topics of personal and academic interest, edit student articles to improve higher-level scientific reading and writing skills, and publish articles to promote health and science literacy in our community. Additionally as a registered campus organization, we provide opportunities for academic and professional development, through workshops such as medical/graduate student and industry panels, pre-professional opportunities, and faculty guest speaker presentations among countless other club events. We also hold fundraiser socials to build a diverse community of students passionate about science and writing, among other informal events in collaboration with other campus organizations to provide additional opportunities such as volunteering and outreach events. This club offers plenty of room for personal and academic growth as a leader with various executive board positions to pursue with continued club commitment and dedication to the mission of MSO at UCI to promote health and science literacy in our community!

Flying Samaritans
About:
Flying Samaritans is an undergraduate, student-run 501(c)(3) non-profit organization at University of California, Irvine. We are committed to facilitating the service efforts of The Flying Samaritans, Inc., a registered non-profit corporation. How to Get Involved:
Students can get involved by applying during our recruitment cycle (usually Fall and Spring each year) and choosing between a multitude of committees that they would like to be accepted in (Clinic operations, Recruitment, Community outreach, Public relations, Research, etc.). Some applicants will continue during the interview process, where once they get accepted, they are able to begin getting involved with no fee. Members can get involved with volunteer opportunities throughout the quarter (making school supply kits for students, becoming a high-school mentor, helping medical assistants run a free clinic, and educating people with LGBTQ+ or incarcerated backgrounds about STDs and health.
Global Medical Brigades
About:
Global Medical Brigades (GMB) at UCI is an on-campus organization focused on providing community service and public health education both domestically and abroad as a partnership with the international non-profit organization, Global Brigades. Throughout the year, we participate in workshops, volunteering events, and clinical simulations to become knowledgeable about public health, international forms of medicine, and global healthcare disparities. During the spring and/or summer of each year, our club travels to Honduras, Panama, Nicaragua, Greece, or Ghana with medical supplies and volunteer healthcare provider(s) to assist established staff in Global Brigades’ non-profit year-round clinics. Once our brigade arrives, we assist in providing healthcare. Student members shadow doctors, familiarize themselves with an array of commonly prescribed medications, obtain practice in speaking to patients in a foreign language, learn about a foreign healthcare system and culture, and, above all, help empower communities around the world to improve healthcare access and quality. This brigade program can be in-person or virtual to suit students’ financial and scheduling preferences.

Medical Educational Missions & Outreach (M.E.M.O)
About:
M.E.M.O. (Medical, Educational Missions and Outreach) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, student-run humanitarian organization at UCI, UCSD, and USC that aims to serve the underprivileged communities both locally in Southern California and abroad in Vietnam. Within SoCal, our students volunteer at local health fairs, food banks, and after-school programs. Bhagat Puran Singh Health Initiative (BPSHI)
About:
Bhagat Puran Singh lived a life devoted to serving others. While he was homeless, he begged for money not to nourish himself, but for those who were even less fortunate than himself. Starting with nothing, Bhagat Puran Singh cared for an abandoned child diagnosed with leprosy. Eventually, he was able to build the largest free health care institution in Northern India, called Pingalwara (Home for the Handicapped and Abandoned). Where Bhagat Puran Singh dedicated his life to serve those in need, we hope to make a mark on the world by striving to live as he did, by providing basic health care screening and nutrition advice at our clinics held locally at the Buena Park Singh Sabha Gurdwara.

At UCI Pre-Dental Society, we strive to foster a tight-knit community among pre-dental students at UC Irvine. How to Get Involved:
There is no selection or application process to join Pre-Dental Society! Feel free to start attending any of our general meetings and speak to a board member to fill out a membership form and pay for membership fees. The membership fee varies depending on which quarter you join us and it’s usually around $15-35. If you would like to become a board member, you will have to apply for the Internship Program at the end of fall quarter.

The Pre-Pharmacy Society (PPS) at UCI is a professional organization that provides its members with a positive social environment in order to stimulate their interests in pharmacy and offer leadership opportunities. The Anteater Smile Project is a non-profit organization that aims to assist low-income populations in receiving the dental care that they need. Brain Exercise Initiative @ UCI
About:
Brain Exercise Intitiative at UCI is a chapter of the national nonprofit organization Brain Exercise Initiative, which uses simple math, writing and reading aloud exercises as an intervention to improve cognitive function in those with Alzheimer’s Disease. We achieve this by helping elders complete cognitive exercise packets at senior living facilities throughout Orange County on a weekly basis, through volunteering with the memory care populations at such facilities, and by providing UCI students with a space to discuss dementia and how to increase its awareness in the area.

Teddy Bear Hospital
About:
Teddy Bear Hospital USA at UCI is an undergraduate-led organization working alongside medical students interested in Pediatrics, current UCI/CHOC Pediatric residents, and the local community to promote medical communication and reduce clinical anxiety in kids. Our events take place at elementary schools, where the kids act as parents who bring their “teddy bear kids” to different mock hospital booths. They treat their teddy bears, learn about patient care, and discover careers in medicine. The program aims to provide children with positive health care experiences, promote health and well-being, encourage higher education, and increase health literacy in the community, while providing medical students and allied health students the opportunity to practice the skills necessary for successfully working with children.

How to Get Involved:
Member can apply to our club through our TBH USA at UCI application. For Winter 2024, we are planning to have the application accessible on a rolling basis, so members just need to complete the application and then they can pay the fees and come to our general meetings. General meetings are most even weeks of the 10 week quarter, and we alternative with the TBH sessions are the elementary schools, which are on the odd weeks. Students are considered full members if they abide by our new point system. They most complete a certain number of points by the end of the quarter which can be achieved through coming to general meetings, working on TBH related projects, coming to TBH sessions, etc.

Established in 2017, we are affiliated with the Human Biology major and work closely with Dr. Andrea Nicholas in order to create a close-knit environment between peers within the major. Our goal is to present an opportunity for classmates and peers to bond outside the classroom to address the need for a supportive social network. Transfers in Bio Sci (TBS)
About:
The mission of our club is to provide Transfer students with leadership opportunities, establish connections to the School of BioSci, and foster relationships with other Transfers. As the first major-dedicated Transfer club on campus, it is crucial that we cultivate a safe and inclusive community for the Transfer student population on campus, especially to alleviate Transfer Shock. We additionally aim to help incoming Transfers by promoting and creating UCI BioSci events, as well as establishing a mentorship between current BioSci Transfer students and prospective community college students.

BioSci International Student Association (BISA) is an undergraduate organization at UC Irvine. Our mission is to support and enrich the academic life of international students majoring in Biological Sciences and other related fields. The Associated Students of the University of California, Irvine (ASUCI), is the officially recognized undergraduate student government at the University of California, Irvine. In addition to regularly providing resources and student programming through student-run events and conferences, overseeing commercial activities such as discount tickets and the quarterly vendor fair, organizing large scale school-wide events such as Welcome Week and Summerlands, and administering student services, the ASUCI advocates for students on a university, local, state, and national level and represents the student body on administrative campus and systemwide committees.

MAES was founded in Los Angeles in 1974 to increase the number of Mexican Americans and other Hispanics in the technical and scientific fields. Our MAES chapter here at UCI upholds the same ideals as the national organization and always tries its best to support our MAES familia. This idea of familia is what sets MAES apart from other organizations— we act as the home away from home by providing a sense of community that is difficult to find as a Latino in STEM.
