Some labs have an L restriction. What does that mean?

An L restriction is set for specialized majors. The following sections will initially be restricted for:

Bio Sci D111L, Lab 1 – Developmental & Cell Biology and Biomedical Engineering: Premedical majors
Bio Sci E112L, Lab A7 – Physiology & Exercise Sciences majors
Bio Sci E115L, Lab A – Ecology & Evolutionary Biology majors
Bio Sci M114L, Lab 1 – Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Microbiology & Immunology majors
Bio Sci M116L, Lab 5 – Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Microbiology & Immunology majors
Bio Sci M118L, Lab 9 – Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Microbiology & Immunology majors
Bio Sci N113L, Lab 5 – Neurobiology majors

On Dec. 8th at noon all lab sections will become available to the rest of the graduating senior priority group.

Please see our “When will I be able to enroll in labs?” section to check when additional lab restrictions will lift.

Who is part of the graduating senior priority group for labs?

For lab enrollment, we prioritize School of Bio Sci students who are closest to graduation, which we group under the following graduating senior priority group:

Fall 2022 (or earlier) freshmen
Fall 2024 (or earlier) transfer students
Any Dunlop School of Biological Sciences student with a REASONABLE graduation application on file

At the beginning on Week 7 (Nov. 10th), these students will automatically be pre-cleared for all the labs they meet the prerequisites for.

How do I check which labs I have been cleared for?

If you are part of the graduating senior priority group, you will automatically be pre-approved for all the labs you meet the prerequisites for at the beginning on Week 7 (Nov. 10th).

You can check lab clearances by going to StudentAccess → Student Profile → Enrollment → Course Eligibilities.

If you believe you should have access to a lab that does not appear on your course eligibility list, email biosciadvising@uci.edu at least 2 business days BEFORE your enrollment window.

When and how do I submit a graduation application for labs?

Due to the high demand for upper-division labs, we recommend students submit their graduation applications 1 year in advance.

Students can submit their graduation application on StudentAccess → Applications → Graduation.

I meet the prerequisites because of a class I took outside UC Irvine. Why can’t I enroll?

The enrollment system does not automatically read courses taken outside UC Irvine. If you are trying to enroll in a Bio Sci course, please fill out the Bio Course Prerequisite Clearance Form. We will process your request within 3 business days. For non-Bio courses, you need to contact the academic unit offering the course.

BEFORE submitting the form please check your eligibility:

  • Dunlop School of Bio Sci transfer students have been proactively cleared for all Bio Sci courses they meet the prerequisites for and do NOT need to submit the form
  • Some sections are restricted for specialized majors or have repeat restrictions. Check out the rest of our Enrollment FAQs to see when those restrictions may lift

When will repeat restrictions lift?

Repeat restrictions for all Bio Sci courses will lift on Dec. 18th at noon.

When will the 18-unit enrollment restriction lift?

The enrollment unit limit will switch from 18 to 20 units on Dec. 18th at noon.

Students looking to enroll beyond 20 units will need to submit an Excess Units Petition by Friday of Week 2 of Winter quarter.

Can I take two courses with overlapping meeting times?

Bio Sci will NOT allow students to enroll in classes with overlapping meeting times, regardless of instructor approval. Students should also ensure they do not enroll in classes with overlapping final exam periods.

Students looking to enroll beyond 20 units will need to submit an Excess Units Petition. Based on the processing timeline for UC Online enrollment, please be sure to submit this form at least 3 weeks BEFORE the start of the quarter.

Can I use UC Online courses to replace grades I received at UC Irvine?

It depends. Some UC Online courses MAY be used to repeat UC Irvine courses and replace previous grades, following our Repeat Policy.

However, students must FIRST receive approval from their major department. To request approval from the School of Bio Sci, please email biosciadvising@uci.edu.

I need to repeat Math 5A/B. Can I retake it by enrolling in the UC Online Math 19A/B course offered by UC Santa Cruz?

Yes, Math 19A and Math 19B at UC Santa Cruz (through UC Online) are approved repeats for Math 2A/5A and Math 2B/5B respectively.
