An L restriction is set for specialized majors. The following sections will initially be restricted for:
Bio Sci D111L, Lab 7 – Genetics, Developmental & Cell Biology, and Biomedical Engineering: Premedical majors
Bio Sci E166L – Ecology & Evolutionary Biology majors
Bio Sci M114L, Lab 5 – Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Microbiology & Immunology majors

Bio Sci M118L, Lab 9 – Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Microbiology & Immunology majors
On July 27th at noon all lab sections will become available to the rest of the graduating senior priority group, as long as they are approved for their current major.
Please see our “When will I be able to enroll in labs?” section to check when additional lab restrictions will lift.
For lab enrollment, we prioritize School of Bio Sci students who are closest to graduation, which we group under the following graduating senior priority group:
Fall 2023 (or earlier) freshmen
Fall 2025 (or earlier) transfer students
Any Dunlop School of Biological Sciences student with a REASONABLE graduation application on file
At the beginning on Week 7 (May 11th), these students will automatically be pre-cleared pre-cleared for the labs that are approved for their current major if they meet the prerequisite.
You can see if you have a graduation application by going to StudentAccess → Applications → Graduation.
For priority lab enrollment, your application status must read EITHER “pending” or “received”.
If you are part of the graduating senior priority group, at the beginning of Week 7 (May 11th) you will automatically be pre-cleared for all the labs that are approved for your current major if you meet the prerequisites.
You can check lab clearances by going to StudentAccess → Student Profile → Enrollment → Course Eligibilities.
If you believe you should have access to a lab that does not appear on your course eligibility list, email biosciadvising@uci.edu at least 2 business days BEFORE your enrollment window.
As long as students meet the prerequisites, they can enroll in additional labs on the following dates:
Due to the high demand for upper-division labs, we recommend students submit their graduation applications 1 year in advance.
You can submit your graduation application on StudentAccess → Applications → Graduation.
If you meet all other criteria to be considered part of the “senior priority group” and submit your graduation application AFTER the start of enrollment, lab clearances will take 2-3 business days to process. You will receive an email once your lab clearances have been added.
If you are NOT part of the “senior priority group”, please see our “When will I be able to enroll in labs?” section to check when lab restrictions will lift.

Bio Sci D137, Dis 2 – July 31st. Initially reserved for Developmental & Cell Biology and Genetics majors.
Bio Sci E106, Dis 5 – July 31st. Initially reserved for Ecology & Evolutionary Biology majors.
Bio Sci M114, Dis 1 – July 31st. Initially reserved for Biochemistry & Molecular Biology majors.
Bio Sci M124A, Dis 1 – July 31st. Initially reserved for Microbiology & Immunology majors.
All Bio Sci courses – September 1st.
Specialized major decisions will be sent in mid-July, so students will be able to enroll in the L-restricted classes before the restriction lifts on July 31st.
You should note the course meeting time and leave that slot available in your schedule, so you can easily add the course(s) in July. Students do not need to be enrolled in 12 units, to meet the full-time requirements, until September 15th.
All students will be able to enroll in any Bio Sci course they meet the prerequistes for starting on September 1st.
Every Fall, some seats are reserved for students enrolling at UC Irvine for the first time. You can see the number of seats saved for new students in the NOR column on the Schedule of Classes. Continuing students will be permitted to enroll in a course until the number of reserved seats remain.
For example, Bio Sci E106 has 90 seats reserved for new students. Once 156 students have enrolled, the status will switch to NewOnly. If a student drops and there are more than 90 seats available, the status will switch back to Open and continuing students will be permitted to enroll again.
The enrollment system does not automatically read courses taken outside UC Irvine. If you are trying to enroll in a Bio Sci course, please fill out the Bio Course Prerequisite Clearance Form. We will process your request within 3 business days. For non-Bio courses, you need to contact the academic unit offering the course.
BEFORE submitting the form please check your eligibility (StudentAccess → Student Profile → Enrollment → Course Eligibilities)
Repeat restrictions for all Bio Sci courses will lift on September 1st at noon.
